Plugged Milk Duct
When a milk duct does not drain completely, breastmilk may build up in the duct and create a plug. This feels like a small lump or sore knot in the breast.
A plugged duct may happen:
- If your breasts are engorged
- If your baby skips a feeding
- If your baby is not feeding as often as usual
- If your wear a bra that is too tight
What you can do:
- Breastfeed on the affected side as often as every two hours
- This will help loosen the plug and keep your milk moving freely
- Massage your breast while nursing your baby (refer to picture)
- 1. Start behind the plugged area
- 2. Move your fingers in a circular motion toward the nipple
- Apply heat before each feeding to help with let-down and relieve pain
- Place a warm wet washcloth on the plugged area
- Take a warm shower or bath
- Drink lots of water and get plenty of rest
- Wear a bra that fits well and is not too tight
If your plugged duct doesn’t loosen up, ask for help. Plugged ducts can lead to a breast infection.
